Speaker Specific Strategies of Voicing, Devoicing and Glottalisation in German Stops

چکیده
This paper reports the results from an instrumental investigation into speaker specific strategies of stop voicing, devoicing and glottalisation in German. Laryngograph recordings were taken from eight German speakers producing /p, t, k/ and /b, d, ɡ/ preceded by vowels, nasals or /l/ and followed by nasals or /l/. Four of the subjects produced glottalised stops in some phonetic environments, that is, the stop closure was achieved through a constriction of the glottis, and these subjects also showed spontaneous voicing in some of the fortis stops. The other four subjects showed opposing tendencies, that is, they did not produce any glottalized stops and showed passive devoicing in some of the lenis stops. The observed differences may be associated with speaker-specific strategies of velum control and subsequent effects on aerodynamic conditions in stop production.

An EMMA/EPG study of voicing contrast correlates in German
Except for cavity enlargement strategies there is not much consensus about the involvement of supralaryngeal movements in the production of the voicing contrast. In order to study supralaryngeal stop production mechanisms we investigated the kinematics of tongue tip and jaw as well as tongue-palate contact patterns for four German subjects. We took alveolar stops in word medial (Cm) and word fi...
متن کاملDevoicing of Word-initial Stops: a Consequence of the following Vowel?
The aim of the current study is to investigate the contextual conditions of devoicing of phonologically voiced stops (bilabial and velar). Articulatory and acoustic data from four male speakers were recorded by means of EMMA and EPG. Devoicing was observed more frequently for the velar stops than for the bilabials. The highest occurrence of devoicing was observed when the voiced stop was follow...
متن کاملGerman fricatives: coda devoicing or positional faithfulness?
In this paper we show how Jessen & Ringen’s (2002) analysis of voicing in German stops can be extended to account for the voicing of German fricatives. It is argued that while stops in German contrast for the feature [spread glottis], fricatives contrast for [voice] (and [spread glottis]). Our analysis, which involves presonorant faithfulness, is compared to an analysis with coda devoicing. We ...
متن کاملDevoicing of Phonologically Voiced Obstruents: Is European Portuguese Different from Other Romance Languages?
This paper presents results for voicing maintenance during European Portuguese (EP) stop and fricative production. Results showed that EP presented a high amount of devoicing for all phonologically voiced stops and fricatives. This is in contrast to classical literature reporting high voicing maintenance during stop closure for Romance languages, but confirms our preliminary results from previo...
متن کاملPre-pausal Devoicing and Glottalisation in Varieties of the South-western Arabian Peninsula
A wide range of modern Arabic dialects exhibit devoicing in pre-pausal (utterance-final) position. These include Cairene [20], Gulf Arabic, San’ani [8], [18], Manaxah [19], Central Highland Yemeni dialects [1], Rijal Alma‘ (Asiri p.c.), Central Sudanese (Dickins p.c.), Çukurova [15], Kinderib [9], E. Fayyum [2]. In some dialects, pausal devoicing is reported to be accompanied by aspiration (e.g...
